1908-S $5 MS63 NGC. The 1908-S With Motto double eagle
1908-S<$5> MS63 NGC. The 1908-S With Motto double eagle has the lowest mintage (22,000 pieces) of any Saint-Gaudens twenty, and it is elusive in any Mint State grade. While the 1908-S half eagle (all with motto on the reverse) also has a low mintage of 82,000 coins, it is generally available in Uncirculated grades, largely thanks to a hoard attributed to early numismatic legend Virgil Brand (1861-1926). Brand, by the time of his death, had amassed an unparalleled accumulation of some 350,000 coins. The present well produced example offers highly lustrous antique-gold surfaces, with a few light abrasions noted on the Indian's cheek and in the exposed open fields.
