1908-S<$20> MS67 PCGS. The 1908-S is a much scarcer issue among early Saints, with an impressively low mintage of only 22,000 pieces. It becomes increasingly difficult to locate in grades of MS65 and higher. In the lofty condition of MS67, the grade of the specimen presented in the current lot, it is virtually unobtainable. Indeed, only four examples have been certified at this level, all by PCGS. No '08-S's have been graded finer (9/05). Likewise, according to our records, only one Superb Gem has appeared at public auction over the past 15 years or so.
The present example displays the thick mint frost typical of this issue, and both sides are enveloped in variegated peach-gold and light mint-green patina. The design elements are sharply defined, which is also characteristic of the issue. The Capitol building and adjacent stars, along with the leaves beneath the rock and the eagle's feathers, all reveal excellent detail. The surfaces are remarkable for their level of preservation and radiant luster. Just a few minute marks on the Liberty and eagle motifs are mentioned for accuracy. Overall, a memorable second-year Saint in a condition that is unlikely to be improved upon.
From The Phillip H. Morse Collection of Saint-Gaudens Coinage.

Important
