1908-S $20 MS66 PCGS. This issue is a major rarity in
1908-S $20 MS66 PCGS. This issue is a major rarity in the Saint-Gaudens series, one of just 22,000 pieces coined during the year, all representing the With Motto design modification suggesting that they must have been coined rather late in the year. With the exception of the High Relief coins, the mintage is the lowest of any date in the Saint-Gaudens series from 1907 to 1933. The research of Roger Burdette shows that the first coinage took place on September 10, 1908, and these were the first examples of this design coined at the Western most facility. Unlike many Saint-Gaudens issues, the '08-S coinage actually entered circulation, and quite a number of circulated pieces still exist today. On the other hand, Mint State coins are rarities, regardless of the grade level, and Gem or finer pieces are extremely rare. The average certified grade, as recorded by Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth in their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, is just (AU) 57.4.
This Premium Gem is a highly lustrous piece with frosty yellow-gold surfaces. It is sharply struck with outstanding detail on both sides, including the city view at the lower left obverse border. Although a few scattered marks are visible on each side, viewing requires close scrutiny. Each side has a few tiny orange spots, and these also require magnification. A magnificent example that will please the connoisseur. Population: 7 in 66, 5 finer (4/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
