1908-S<$20> MS66 PCGS. The Philadelphia and Denver mints in 1908 each produced examples both with and without the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on the lower reverse, the change necessitated by Congress' overriding of President Theodore Roosevelt's deeply held antagonism to the "sacrilegious" placing of a reference to the Deity on our nation's coinage--despite the fact that it had appeared on various issues since 1863. The San Francisco Mint, however, failed to produce any of the No Motto coinage, and made only 22,000 examples of the With Motto pieces in 1908. The mintage, in fact, is the lowest of any With Motto Saint-Gaudens, including all of the later issues that are generally thought of as much more exotic and elusive. Because of the low mintage, this issue is seldom encountered in any Mint State grade, much less a Premium Gem MS66 example such as the present piece.
Our recent Morse Collection sale gave an unexpected boost to the availability of the highest grade coins, but it is usually a matter of years between offerings at the MS66 grade level. In fact, this is only the fifth appearance of an example finer than MS65 in any of our auctions since we began our archives in 1993. Removing the two Morse coins from the equation, we have offered just three such coins in the past 13 years. This amazing Premium Gem offers sharp design elements and amazing luster. The frosty orange-gold surfaces are highly appealing, with hints of hazel on the obverse highpoints. This example's sharp strike enriches all the design elements on both obverse and reverse, leaving them boldly detailed. Population: 9 in 66, 4 finer (6/06).
From The Jackson Hole Collection.
