1908-S $10 MS67 NGC. Although 1907 was the premiere year for the Indian Head ten dollar gold coin, none were struck in San Francisco or Denver, and it was 1908 before the new design saw full-scale production at the branch mints. Congress mandated that the motto IN GOD WE TRUST be added, and only Denver struck 1908-D No Motto coins with the Charles Barber-modified business strike design. Once the motto was added, new coinage dies were sent to San Francisco as well as Denver. (Notably New Orleans, by then on its last legs as a U.S. Mint facility, was omitted.)
Collectors of the present day owe a huge debt of gratitude to the coiners of the San Francisco Mint in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as they produced many wonderful issues of gold and silver coinage that far outdistance their counterparts from the other branch mints in terms of strike, luster, and overall eye appeal. The low-mintage 1908-S ten dollar coin is a case in point as, although only 59,850 specimens were struck, the issue comes exceptionally nice, and apparently there were some West Coast collectors by that time who lovingly preserved examples for posterity and profit. At NGC, this MS67 piece is one of three so graded, but there are also two MS68 pieces at that service and, incredibly, one MS69! PCGS has certified eight examples in MS67, along with four coins in MS68 and none finer (1/08). Only twice before have we had the pleasure of offering an MS67 1908-S eagle, with two other offerings of MS68-graded pieces.

Coin Engraver: Augustus Saint-Gaudens

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
