1908-O 50C MS68 NGC. Fully toned in waves of sea-green
1908-O 50C MS68 NGC. Fully toned in waves of sea-green and apricot colors, this lovely O-mint Barber half dollar displays dazzling luster and possesses incomparable eye appeal. A good strike for the New Orleans Mint, since only the right shield corner, the nearby feathers, and the fletchings exhibit incompleteness of detail. 1908 was the last full year of production at the New Orleans facility, whose fate was sealed by a combination of two factors. Silver dollar production ceased in 1904, and a more modern branch mint opened at Denver in 1906. As is the case with so many Barber half issues, the 1908-O is available in average circulated condition, but is difficult to find in VF and finer grades. Mint State pieces can be acquired for a price, but the opportunity of a condition census piece seldom arrives. According to the consignor, the present Superb Gem was part of the Emerson Gaylord collection. Major gold coins from the Gaylord collection were auctioned by Mayflower in Boston on May 18, 1963, but this beautiful Barber half was retained by the family until recently. Tied for the honor of finest certified with one other MS68 graded by NGC, which appeared in our 2005 FUN auction as part of the incomparable John C. Hugon collection of Barber coinage.
