1908-D<$5> MS65 PCGS. It is not often that we have an opportunity to present a Gem quality Indian half eagle, regardless of the date. Upon a review of our auction archives, which date back to January 1993, we find a total of 8,678 Indian half eagles in all of our auctions, and yet just 156 of those piece grade MS65, and 26 finer, considering all grading services combined. In the particular case of this 1908-D half eagle, it is tied for the finest of the date certified by PCGS. Perhaps most telling is the fact that this is the first Gem MS65 example of this date that has appeared in any of our auctions during the same time period.
The surfaces of this Gem example are remarkable with frosty and brilliant yellow color and hints of orange toning. The design elements on both sides are boldly defined. Even the mintmark signifying this coin was struck in Denver is complete and sharp. A few tiny abrasions can only be seen with microscopic examination. Population: 7 in 65, 0 finer (4/06).
