1908-D<$5> MS64 NGC. Although it does not carry a significant premium above a common date Indian Half Eagle, such as the 1909-D, the 1908-D has one of the lowest mintages of the series. Only three issues have a lesser production than the 1908-D. Just 148,000 pieces were struck, and although MS62 and MS63 examples are generally available, the issue becomes scarce at the MS64 level. This is significant, since the eye appeal of a near-Gem is usually much nicer than an abraded or lackluster lower graded counterpart. This shimmering yellow-gold piece has the usual incompletion of strike on the lowest headdress feathers, and the right reverse field has a few small marks, but the originality and quality are unmistakable.
From The Henry R.
