1908-D<$10> No Motto MS64 NGC. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, in their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins 1795-1933, comment about this issue, "As a date this issue does not command the respect it deserves. One of the probable reasons for the lack of high end coins is the dull luster and weaker strikes so often encountered for this date -- factors required to earn a gem grade by the grading services." And so it is with this coin. The luster is dull, almost matte in quality, and satiny. The strike is on the weak side, particularly on the hair over Liberty's ear. The overall effect, however, is quite appealing, with the soft, satin luster combining with peach-gold color for nice effect. The surfaces are minimally abraded, with the most notable being a mark on Liberty's neck above the 9 in the date.
