1908 $5 PR67 NGC.
1908 $5 PR67 NGC. According to Charles E. Green (1936) only 167 proofs were made of this first year of the Pratt Indian head design. There is evidence that not all the 167 pieces were distributed, and some, in fact, were melted on January 2, 1909 after 100 gold proof sets were assembled. Today, despite a higher mintage, the 1908 does not appear to be significantly more available than other dates of matte proof fives. We estimate that perhaps 40-55 pieces may still be extant in all grades. This piece has unbelievably smooth, even, matte surfaces. There are no shiny spots, contact marks, hairlines, or any other detracting post-striking impairments on either side. Not nearly as green tinted as many 1908 fives, the overall coloration on this piece is more of an even reddish-golden. The only identifying mark on either side of this spectacular coin that might (possibly) be used for pedigree purposes is a tiny speck of grease that was struck into the coin at 3 o'clock near the reverse rim above the second T in TRUST. Exceptional quality and eye appeal. Population: 6 in 67, 1 finer (11/03). Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
