1908 $5 PR66 PCGS. Proofs of this first-year Indian He
1908 $5 PR66 PCGS. Proofs of this first-year Indian Head half eagle display a dark, matte finish. Concerning this distinctive finish, gold specialists Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth (2006) write: "It is believed that a special grain powder was used on the planchets to give them this curious finish, which was not reflective, unlike the finish seen on prior Proof coins. The matte finish proved generally unpopular with collectors and the Philadelphia Mint changed the Proof finish in 1909."
Virtually pristine surfaces display a rich straw-gold color with subtle hints of light green, and a wisp or two of light orange on the reverse. A sharp, even strike emboldens the design elements, with no areas that reveal hints of softness. Impeccably preserved surfaces exhibit no marks that are worthy of note. We mention a hard-to-see linear mark immediately to the right of the eagle's head strictly for pedigree purposes. Nicer examples of this gorgeous matte proof are difficult to imagine. Population: 12 in 66, 1 finer (10/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
