1908 $5 PR65 PCGS. Undoubtedly, the mint did not expect the negative reaction they received from the coin collecting public when they introduced the matte proofing process in 1908. A large number of proof Half Eagles were struck as a result--167 pieces to be exact. Apparently, not all 167 pieces were distributed, and some were melted on January 2, 1909 after 100 gold proof sets were assembled. Today, despite a higher mintage, the 1908 does not appear to be significantly more available than other dates of matte proof Fives. We estimate that perhaps 40-55 pieces may still be extant in all grades. This piece has the usual coarse-grain, matte finish and slightly deeper golden and khaki coloration. Minimal marks are evident, even with magnification, and there do not appear to be any shiny spots on either side.
