1908 $5 PR64 NGC. The original mintage of 167 specimens was not a complete sellout, and an unknown quantity faced melting. Still, the 1908 ranks as one of the most available proof Indian half eagles, with Garrett and Guth (2006) crowning it as "the most common." As such, it is the issue of choice for many collectors who seek a single example of matte proof gold. This piece, with its even khaki-orange coloration and glowing, microgranular surfaces, exemplifies the finish, strange and unwelcome to American collectors in its time. The specimen's grade-limiting flaw, a disturbance at the left obverse rim, is barely visible in the holder and a minor concern overall, yet it keeps the piece from a higher grade and its correspondingly larger price. Overall, an attractive example from an interesting chapter in the history of America's proof coinage. Census: 18 in 64, 61 finer (6/07).

Coin Engraver: Bela Lyon Pratt

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
