1908 $5 PR64 NGC. The year 1908 marked the beginning of the Mint's experimentation with differing finishes for proof gold coinage. The proof surfaces of 1908 featured a dark, fine-grained sandblast or matte finish, one that was disliked by collectors but saved in considerable numbers. The present piece shows some tan-gold coloration with a tinge of olive that is typical for the issue. A couple of minute luster grazes are noted on the obverse--one on the Indian's jawline, one before the nose--and a larger graze in the left (reverse) field near the E in the motto. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth, distraction-free, and compelling. Census: 18 in 64, 61 finer (4/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
