1908<$5> MS65 PCGS. Type collectors often focus on first-year and last-year issues within a given series, but oftentimes the first-year pieces, generally much more widely saved than the last-year coins, are more available--and therefore less costly in high grades--than their last-year brethren. So it is with the 1908 Indian Head issue, which is often found in lower Mint State grades, and also available in Gem condition for a price. This example offers deep, mellow orange-gold coloration with exceedingly clean devices, including the Indian's cheekbone and highpoints of the eagle, as well as pristine fields. A bit of strike weakness on the lower necklace is noted, but the overall eye appeal is extremely high, as expected for the grade. PCGS has graded 16 pieces finer (9/06). As a side note, the last-year issue, the 1929, in Gem condition would likely go for two or three times what the present piece will bring.
From The Hamburg-Sonoma Collection.
