1908 $5 MS65 PCGS. The 1908 Indian Head half eagle is fairly common in circulated and lower Mint State grades. Like many first-year issues, it was apparently saved in considerable numbers by the collecting public, and even today Gem survivors may be had for a price. Survivors in MS66, however, are seldom encountered. PCGS and NGC combined have certified close to 300 pieces in Gem grade--the grade of the present piece--including duplicates, but only 29 coins finer (3/07). This example boasts delectable lemon-yellow centers that mellow toward the peripheries into more-typical matte-like khaki-gold surfaces. The piece garners its Gem ranking through a combination of exuberant luster and a relative absence of mentionable abrasions on either side. Undoubtedly one of the nicest pieces to survive from the mintage of more than a half-million pieces.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
