1908<$5> MS65 NGC. This is the first year of issue for the novel sunken Indian Head design by Bela Lyon Pratt, chosen due to his connection with Dr. William Bigelow, who in turn was a friend of President Theodore Roosevelt. It was Roosevelt's desire to improve coinage designs across the entire spectrum of United States coinage, and the gold coins were first due to their importance in national and international finance. Not only is this date the first issue of the design, but it is also the most common date of the series in Gem grades, a perfect choice for type collectors. This Gem example has satiny yellow-gold luster with brilliant obverse and reverse surfaces and strong design details. A few faint surface marks are consistent with the grade. Census: 86 in 65, 14 finer (7/06).
