1908<$20> Motto MS65 PCGS. Despite a small mintage of just 156,258 coins, the 1908 With Motto double eagle is available in nearly any desired grade ... except Gem. This date is considered to be an important rarity in MS65 or finer grades. In his double eagle Red Book, Dave Bowers commented: "While many 1908 With Motto twenties seem to have been shipped to Europe, it is likely that most were retained in America and melted in the 1930s. Today Mint State pieces are fairly scarce, MS-64 coins are especially so, and any finer coin is a rarity." This is the first year of issue for the new With Motto design, and specialists will recognize this as a short, four-year design type issued only from 1908 to 1911. The obverse has 46 stars around the border, representing each of the 46 states that were part of the nation at that time. Two additional stars were added to the obverse in 1912, representing the states of New Mexico and Arizona, and technically creating a new design type. This example is a sharply struck and fully lustrous Gem with soft, frosty yellow-gold luster and hints of olive color. The surfaces are remarkably pristine for the grade. An exceptional example with great eye appeal, and an important issue that is seldom encountered so fine. Population: 28 in 65, 10 finer (7/06).
