<Our item number 109159>1908 $2.50 Indian. NGC graded Proof 67. Encased in NGC holder 1731962-001. Well struck and a choice coin. A superlative sandblast finish proof, tinted a rich olive-gold and orange. The surfaces are a delight to behold, being totally free of shiny spots, lines, or other impediments to the Proof 67 grade; a high end example of these briefly made and rare Proof-finish issues. Proofs of this year are always a hit with collectors young and old. Not only is it the first year of issue for the "recessed relief" Indian design, and a low mintage date as well with only 236 proofs struck (many of which were melted), but all sandblast Proofs also have a distinctive heavy frost comprised of millions of tiny diamond-sparkle "facets" when viewed with a magnifier. A few score have been certified by the grading services (with multiple submittals a distinct possibility). Perhaps the number remaining hovers in the range of 75 to 100 pieces, few in states of prese rvation that come within a country mile of this gorgeous piece! Pop 22; none finer. (PCGS # 7957).

In 1908, the Philadelphia Mint sold the first sandblast finish gold Proofs. After the first year, the Mint altered its procedure by switching to the satin finish for 1909-10. This, too, proved less than satisfactory, so the first finish was revived for 1911-15. All sandblast finish Indian quarter eagles have razor-sharp detail where even the tiniest element in the design shows clearly: the thin vanes, the vexillum or shafts of the feathers, the zigzag pattern of tiny todt on the headband, everything, in other words, that is on the die in the first place!
Estimated Value $30,000-33,000.

Our item number 109159
<IMAGES>

</IMAGES>
