1908 $2 1/2 PR66 NGC.
1908 $2 1/2 PR66 NGC. A complete, well-matched set of 1908 matte proof gold pieces have been consigned to this auction. This is the first time we can remember such a consignment since the 1994 ANA Sale when we had a complete set of all the matte (and Roman Finish) proof gold coins consigned. The 1908 is a curious issue because the official mintage for proof quarter eagles from this year was reported to be 236 pieces. It is possible that the Mint actually struck that many pieces, and it is also possible that all 236 pieces were distributed. However, if all the coins that were struck were indeed distributed, attrition took a very high toll on this date. It is more likely that a substantial number were melted at year's end as unsold. Some researchers have estimated that only 50 pieces exist today, but we believe that between 75 and 100 pieces are still extant. This is a marvelously well preserved coin. As with the other coins in this set, there are no shiny spots or contact marks on either side. A shallow planchet flaw can be seen on the lowest feather of the Indian's headdress, this inconspicuous flaw serving as a distinctive pedigree identifier for the future. Rich green-gold color is seen on both sides, and is more pronounced than on the other three denominations in the set from this year. This green tinting is characteristic of almost all 1908 matte proof gold coins. Exceptional quality and rarity. Population: 11 in 66, 2 finer (10/03). Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
