1908 $10 No Motto MS67 NGC
1908 $10 No Motto MS67 NGC. The first ten dollar gold pieces struck at the Philadelphia and Denver mints in early 1908 lacked the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, as President Theodore Roosevelt had a personal objection to the use of the Deity's name on coins. It would not be until May of that year that the motto was legally restored on the nation's gold coinage, with actual production beginning in June.
With its mintage of 33,500 pieces, the 1908 No Motto ten dollar has the lowest production after the 1911-D. While it is scarce, this issue is not quite as rare as its low mintage would seem to indicate, as a goodly number were apparently saved in the year of issue. PCGS and NGC have certified 500 or so examples in the lower Uncirculated grades of MS60 to MS62. Around 260 MS63 and MS64 coins have been graded, and fewer than 40 examples rate MS65. The services have seen 16 Premium Gems, a mere nine MS67s, and a solitary coin finer.
The Superb Gem we offer in the current lot displays full, dazzling luster on satiny surfaces. Beautiful medium orange-gold coloration is imbued with a greenish-gold tint, and a well executed strike translates into strong definition on the design elements. Rounding out the fantastic eye appeal of this specimen is the lack of any mentionable marks or alloy spots. For pedigree purposes, we mention a couple of inoffensive marks above the eagle's right (left facing) wing. Attributes such as those seen on this example led gold specialist David Akers to exclaim: "Top quality examples of this issue are definitely among the most attractive of the series." Population: 4 in 67, 0 finer (6/07).
From The Belle Glade Collection, Part Two.

Coin Engraver: Augustus Saint-Gaudens

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
