1908 $10 No Motto MS66 PCGS. Ex: Duckor/Kruthoffer
1908<$10> No Motto MS66 PCGS. Ex: Duckor/Kruthoffer Collection. The first ten dollar gold pieces struck at Philadelphia and Denver in early 1908 did not contain the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. This was because President Theodore Roosevelt personally objected to the use of the Deity's name on coins. He probably recalled the jeers and remarks that greeted the original addition of this motto to American coinage, such as "In God We Trust-All Others Must Pay Cash," or "In gold We Trust." In any event, it was not until May 18, 1908 that the motto was restored on the nation's gold coinage. With a mintage of just 33,500 pieces, the 1908 No Motto eagle has the second lowest production after the 1911-D. While certainly scarce, the issue is not quite as rare as the low mintage would indicate, as a fair number were apparently saved in the year of issue. A number of MS60 to MS64 '08 No Motto tens have been graded, however full Gems, with a certified population of just over 30 specimens, are now rare. This coin clearly ranks as one of the finest known with a combined population of 13 coins in MS66, with eight finer (3/06).
The surfaces possess a rich, satiny appearance and all details are extremely sharply struck up including the feathers in the headdress and each feather on the eagle's wing. Beautifully toned and fully original, the color spectrum includes rose-gold, lime-green, crimson-pink, and hints of ice-blue on the reverse. Only the tiniest abrasion is detected in the left reverse field near the juncture of the eagle's wing and vertically placed leg. Population: 6 in 66, 3 finer (3/06).
Indian Eagle Selections from the Dr. Steven L. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids.
