1907-S $10 MS63 PCGS. Jeff Garrett says it superbly in
1907-S<$10> MS63 PCGS. Jeff Garrett says it superbly in his (and Ron Guth's) monumental new gold coin Encyclopedia: "The 1907-S eagle is easily the scarcest of any Liberty Head eagle of the 20th century, even though the mintage is not among the lowest. Akers called this date one of his favorites and considered it one of the most underrated of all U.S. coins (of any denomination). Today, this date has begun to receive the respect it deserves, and price guides (and auction records) are finally reflecting the scarcity of this date. The most 'common' Mint State grades are MS61 and MS62. In MS63 and better grades, the 1907-S eagle becomes very rare, with the finest example appearing at the MS66 level."
The current specimen boasts lovely deep orange-gold surfaces, with a small copper alloy spot on the obverse rim at 7:30. A lustrous and boldly struck piece, this example shows a few light, grade-consistent abrasions. Population: 12 in 63, 8 finer (7/06).
