1907. High Relief, Roman Numerals, Wire Rim NGC graded
1907. High Relief, Roman Numerals, Wire Rim NGC graded Unc Details. Mount Removed. The high relief double eagles are by of a slightly lower relief than the ultra high reliefs and feature distinct rims wherein are arranged stars and the legend E PLURIBUS UNUM in three bands (from a tripartite collar). Production began on September 1st of 1907. The collar design had a small gap between the dies and collar resulting in what is commonly known as the "wire rim" variety. The mint considered this a characteristic it didn't want and so modified the collar slightly. Coins from productions runs after the thin, irregular fin of metal was eliminated are known as the "flat rim" variety. High relief $20s were not subjected to the same chemical bath of a nitric acid solvent prior to striking that their ultra high relief counterparts were. Rather than the bright and somewhat reflective Roman-gold surface, the high relief issues typically feature a satiny luster with a slightly more reddish-yellow tint to the gold.
Estimated Value $6,000 - 6,500.
