1907. High Relief, Roman Numerals, Flat Rim NGC graded
1907. High Relief, Roman Numerals, Flat Rim NGC graded Unc Details. Obverse scratch. Light golden toning. A satiny lustrous example that you can use as a benchmark for other examples that share this grade. The obverse scratch is faint and unassuming, while the strike is forthright and crisp, it is definitely full, including all of the head and drapery details as well as the eagle.

In the summer of 1907, the designer of this coin, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, who had been in failing health for some time, took a turn for the worse, and in August he died. As luck would have it, he never lived to see examples of his own Double Eagle design. After Roosevelt had been appeased by the striking of 11,250 High Relief coins, the Mint obtained authorization to lower the relief of its design; at the same time, normal numeral punches used for the date, replacing the Roman Numerals.

Without question, the MCMVII issues of 1907 are highly respected by collectors and are among the most illustrious in all American numismatics.
Estimated Value $8,000 - 8,500.
