1907 High Relief Flat Rim NCS graded AU Details. NCS graded Details of AU-50. Improperly Cleaned. Some reverse rim nicks. The original 1907 Saint-Gaudens design was struck with an extremely high relief, unlike any other coin of its kind ever minted. That was followed by 11,000+ more "high relief" pieces. The design has been heralded as a numismatic treasure, a miniature sculpture created in solid gold.

In many ways, the high relief Saints were the works of a genius, not merely coins for commerce. The 1907 date is also notable for being in the Roman numerals MCMVII such as the style seen on classic Roman coinage. Production of the high relief required a special hydraulic coin press and up to five blows by the dies in order to bring up the fine details.

One offshoot of the complicated way these had to be minted was that the cost of production was prohibitive. No sooner had the U.S. Mint struck the first 11,250 coins than minting was halted. The high relief designs were modified by lowering the relief to permit faster minting on the electric coining presses, and to make them easier for banks tellers to stack and count.

Due to its unique place in history, the 1907 High Relief is one of the most beloved gold coins of all times in this or any other country. As such, it is reserved for the rare coin collector of rare judgment who insists on owning the most artistic.
