1907-D $20 MS67 NGC. While the 1907-D cannot be considered an absolute rarity among late-date twenty Libs, it is an issue that has a transcendent appeal to a wide range of collectors. The Denver mint opened the previous year, this being the second year of issue as well as the final year for the long-lived Longacre design (first struck for commercial usage in 1850). In addition to being of importance to collectors of Denver coinage and to type collectors, the 1907-D is also one of the better produced and most attractive coins of the Type Three design. The mint luster on this piece is deep and frosted, resembling a San Francisco product at first glance. The coin displays rich orange-gold coloration that is immediately appealing and unquestionably original. While some 1907-D twenties display softness of detail on the eagle's wings and the star radials, this coin is absolutely fully struck in all areas. As one would expect, the surfaces are notably free from the abrasions that normally plague this issue and Type Three twenties in general. In fact, by way of identifiers, we list the following surface defects that will differentiate this coin from the other two pieces that have been so graded: on the obverse, a short diagonal mark is located just below the point of the truncation of the bust, a couple of minor milling marks are seen out from star 4, and on the reverse there is a squiggly lint mark below the first S in STATES. As mentioned, there are only two other MS67 coins known, both of which have been certified by NGC, and we suspect that after some 18 years of third-party grading that few if any comparably graded coins will emerge from collections. This is an important opportunity to acquire this final-year issue and only the second time we have been privileged to offer this date in this grade--the last time being the ANA Sale in 1998.
