<B>1907 Brenner Lincoln Plaque and Autographed Card.</B></I> Bronze, 180 mm x 240 mm x 8 mm. Victor D. Brenner's 1907 plaque was the model for the 1909 Lincoln cent. A half-length portrait of a bearded President Lincoln facing right. The plaque is backed by jade-green and ivory-gray marble that measures 215 mm x 270 mm x 13 mm. The back of the marble features a bronze stand. Nearly as made aside from a couple of unimportant toning spots.<BR>Lot 6785 in our 2006 September Long Beach Signature included reminiscences by the consignor of a different-sized (170 mm x 230 mm ) plaque. That consignor stated,<BR>"As a mechanical engineering student at Oregon State University in late 1954, I was selected to present a paper at a conference of ASME in Pittsburgh after winning the regional competition in San Francisco a short time before. My host in Pittsburgh was an avid small cent collector and possessed an example of the 180 mm x 240 mm plaque. It was glued (probably using shellac by the sculptor himself) to a polished green rectangle. In detail, it was precisely the same as the present example, except without the cast-in hanger. My host said that Brenner lived and worked in Pittsburgh at the time the plaque was cast.<BR>"The next example that I saw was in the summer of 1957 and was on display at the Smithsonian as part of the Mint's regular small cent exhibit. That one was the same as the Pittsburgh specimen."<BR>Also included with the lot is a cream-white cardboard cent holder, 85 mm x 65 mm, autographed "with compliments, V. D. Brenner" in purple ink. The holder houses a mostly Brown Uncirculated 1909 VDB cent. Per a 1998 article by Ed Reiter at pcgs.com, this is a presentation cent: "Brenner, it appears, acquired examples of the 1909 VDB cent made at the Philadelphia Mint (in much more plentiful numbers than the S-mint version) and placed them in cardboard holders - one to a holder - which he then signed and gave to friends and associates."<BR><BR><b>Shipping:</b> Coins & Currency (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.heritageauctions.com/common/shipping.php">view shipping information</a>)
