1897 25C PR68 NGC. The Barber design was unpopular with contemporary collectors, and while numismatists of the time had little influence on business-strike mintages, their orders for proofs shrank significantly between 1892 and 1897. In the latter year, production of proof Barber quarters sank to a then-series low of 731 specimens, and after that, mintages rebounded somewhat. Not until 1904 did the Mint receive fewer orders for silver proof sets.
For coins without a Cameo designation, this is one of just seven PR68 pieces certified by NGC, with none finer (1/08). The upper obverse hints at past contrast, with a sliver of gleaming silver-white at the margin that contrasts prominently with the moderate frost at the top of Liberty's cap. The lower obverse and reverse show ample forest-green and reddish-orange patina. Immaculately preserved and eminently appealing, a top-notch survivor.

Coin Engraver: Charles E.
