1907 $20 St. Gaudens. High relief, wire rim. PCGS graded MS-65. A lovely gem example with hints of rose color gold within the protected areas. We are pleased to offer this exquisitely beautiful example of the prized MCMVII gold coin, a satiny gem whose radiance covers all the golden yellow surfaces plus a nuance of pale reddish iridescence. Finely detailed and appealing, a coin that shows Saint-Gaudens mastery of design in its best light.

The Roman Numerals pieces have been treasured ever since they made their appearance. Collectors value them for their impressive artistic theme as well as for the prestige that owing one confers. Fortunately, sufficient Gems were saved at the time to afford today's well-placed buyers a steady range of specimens of the date in this and various other grades (although most survivors tend to be from the occasional Very Fine and Extremely Fine coin upward into lower Mint State grades). When a gorgeous gem such as the present specimen go under the auctioneer's hammer, the level of participation tends to increase, since many collectors desire the finest pieces for their collections. The present gem is among the most beautiful MS65 examples seen by the grading services in our estimation. Pop 277; 68 in 66, 17 in 67, 3 in 68, 1 in 69 (PCGS # 9135) .

What could you buy with your 1907 High Relief $20 gold pieces (plural!) back in those memorable days? Well for a start, take the Model T Ford automobile which made its debut the year following this coin's arrival: in 1908, the Model T had a purchase price of $825.00. Over ten thousand were sold in its first year, establishing a new record. Four years later the price dropped to $575.00 and sales soared. In the next eighteen years, out of Ford's Piquette Avenue, Highland Park, River Rouge, and from assembly plants all over the United States came 15,000,000 more.

Base Price of a Ford Model T if paid for in $20 gold pieces is as follows: 1908-09: $825 = 41.25 coins, 1910-11: $780 = 39 coins, 1911-12: $690 = 34.5 coins, 1912-13: $600 = 30 coins, 1913-14: $550 = 27.5 coins, 1914-15: $360 = 18 coins. Someone today might call this "deflation." What people back then understood was that advancing productivity was making everyone wealthier.
Estimated Value $34,000 - 36,000.
