1907 $20 St. Gaudens HR Flat Rim PCGS MS64
A satiny example with extraordinary eye appeal, swirling luster, and boldness of strike. Specimens like the present serve to characterize the magnificence of the Saint-Gaudens type in its originally intended medallic high relief - is it any wonder this beautiful design is high on the list of everyone's favorite rendition of Liberty in American numismatics. Every bit the MS64 that the label purports it to be, and worth strong consideration if a lovely gem MCMVII $20 is out of your reach.

Countless words have been printed about the MCMVII High Relief double eagle, and we can appreciate that. However, we would be remiss if we didn't at least give a brief sketch here for those who may not be familiar with the fascinating story behind the coin. Augustus Saint-Gaudens designed it; Charles E. Barber, the mint engraver who had to engrave the dies, loathed it; Theodore Roosevelt who idolized Saint-Gaudens stamped his foot and wouldn't take No as an answer from Barber; and so Barber's mint staff struck a token number (said to be just north of 11,000 pieces) before the harsh light of reason and budgetary constraint forced the powers that be to allow the design to be reduced to more fitting proportions for industrial-strength coin production in the millions. This is one of the few that survive it all is glory.
