1907 $20 Liberty PR65 Cameo NGC. This was a transitional year for the double eagle with the Liberty design used for most of the year at all three operating mints. Although a few experimental pieces of the new Saint-Gaudens piece were produced early in the year, the High Relief design was not coined until November 1907. Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Mint produced 1.4 million business strike Liberty double eagles as well as 78 proofs. It seems that about 30 to 40 of the proofs still exist today, although this is only an estimate as pedigree tracking is extremely difficult. Today, auction appearances are rather plentiful, given several coins that have made a number of appearances in recent years. Over the last 25 years, a number of important collections have been sold, swelling the number of available proof gold coins in all denominations. Collections such as Eliasberg, Pittman, Bass, Norweb, Starr, Carter, and others all had numerous proof gold pieces that have changed hands several times since their initial market appearance.
This Gem has glittering mirrored fields with fully brilliant yellow-gold color. The devices are lightly frosted, imparting a pleasing and desirable cameo appearance. A few wispy hairlines are evident on each side, consistent with the grade assigned. A short khaki-color line at the lower hair bun may prove useful to trace the pedigree of this piece. This piece is unquestionably a proof, and two polished areas in the design help to support this attribution. The bridge of the nose is broken and polished, about level with the upper eyelid. On the reverse, a small area of die polish is visible on the scroll between the letters L and U of PLURIBUS. We are not aware of any business strikes that show either of these two characteristics.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
