1907<$20> Liberty PR64 Cameo PCGS. After a run of 57 years, the Philadelphia Mint retired the Liberty design from the double eagle in 1907 without much fanfare given to the collector market. On the contrary, the excitement created by the new Saint-Gaudens design may have actually lessened the already limited demand for proofs and a mere 78 pieces were struck, the lowest production of any 20th century double eagle up to this point. Population data would suggest that 45 to 55 specimens survive as identifiable proofs.
Offered here is one of the flashier proof 1907 twenties to come our way, a Choice specimen with unusually bold contrast for a proof gold coin from this time frame. The depth of mirrored reflectivity is excellent and there are no signs of contact or mishandling. Inspection with a glass reveals a small pocket of wispy hairlines to the left of the date and lower portion of the portrait. A small lintmark in the reverse field at 9 o'clock should be useful for attribution. The specialist in high quality proof gold should find this dazzling specimen of considerable interest. Population: 7 in 64 Cameo, 2 finer (4/06).
