1907 $20 Liberty PCGS Proof 64
1907 $20 Liberty. PCGS graded Proof 64. Lovely golden toning. Only 78 struck. Sharply struck, the eagle and stars possess fastidious definition and detail that is remarkable for its keen-edge sharpness is noted on Liberty's hair curls. The major devices have a deep sharp impression as well against the contrast of the mirror field, although any frost on the portrait is not quite as much as is that seen on some earlier dated Proofs before the mint switched to an all-brilliant die finish in 1901. Deep warm-gold to reddish patina dominates both sides while the glossy surfaces exhibit the often-seen "orange-peel" effect with a few faint hairlines. The virtually undisturbed surfaces of this imposing Choice Proof 64 $20 are what will cause bidders to eagerly anticipate this sale.

The final Proof issue of the venerable Longacre $20 Liberty series, fewer than a hundred Proofs were struck as mentioned above, in fact, the 78 figure marks this as the lowest such mintage of the denomination since 1898. It is probable that less than half of the mintage has survived without some sort of injury, although the grading services reflect a higher total due to resubmissions from optimistic owners. We can picture this in a newer slab with the designation "+" applied, since that is what we see on the coin itself. Pop 16; 3 finer (PCGS # 9123) .

1907 is the year the passenger liner RMS Lusitania made its maiden voyage from Liverpool, England to New York City. The year also introduced the world to the Autochrome Lumière as the first commercial color photography process.
Estimated Value $32,000 - 34,000.
