1907<$20> High Relief, Wire Rim PR65 NGC. A magnificent Gem example of this popular and beautiful coin. The surfaces are excellent. Close examination will find faint hairlines with careful scrutiny, which apparently account for the grade. A couple of tiny ticks can also be found, but the delicate fields and devices retain the familiar swirl lines from die polishing seen on all specimens from these dies. Carefully preserved, enough to keep the delicate Wire Rim intact, a feature often lacking on inferior examples. The Wire Rim was created during the extreme striking pressures which forced up a tiny sliver of gold between the coin and the collar that held the dies. Mint workers sometimes called this feature a "fin," others have used the term "knife rim," all of which refer to the same thing.
The Philadelphia Mint had to strike these several times in order to bring up the design fully. The dies were engraved with far greater depth than normal for a regular issue coin, and these were more characteristic of a medal than a coin for circulation. Note the three-dimensional effect of the devices, both on Liberty and on the eagle's wing, design elements which seemingly extend well beyond the surface of the coin. Liberty has the appearance of literally walking off the coin toward the viewer. No other American coin has ever come close to the technical achievement or the visual appeal of this design. While these may be slightly less dramatic than the handful of Ultra High Relief examples coined, those are all but unobtainable for most collectors. The present coin, while certainly costing a considerable sum, is far more obtainable by comparison. While NGC considers the present coin to be a proof, PCGS prefers to call most of these High Relief coins a regular business strike instead. The exact method of manufacture involved many steps similar to the proof process for coinage, and a valid argument can be made to support either theory. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids.
