1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS66 PCGS. A direct order from President Theodore Roosevelt overruled Chief Engraver Charles Barber's final complaints and made the High Relief Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle a reality. Production of what most numismatists believe to be the most beautiful regular issue coin in U.S. history began on November 18, 1907. Although some sources place the total number produced at 12,153 pieces, the actual mintage figure is more likely 11,250 coins. This issue was released into circulation, but many coins were quickly hidden away by the public for their unprecedented artistic beauty. This premium Gem is among the most beautiful High Relief Twenties available to today's collectors. With razor sharp striking detail and smooth surfaces that are free of bothersome handling marks, this coin would fit nicely into a high quality date or type set. The color is a warm, original, honey-gold shade that lightens to yellow-gold hues as the surfaces turn into the light. We last offered a similarly graded representative of this awe-inspiring type as lot 7063 in our June 2002 Long Beach Signature Sale. That coin, also certified by PCGS, traded hands for $41,400. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
