1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS66 NGC. The so-c
1907<$20> High Relief, Wire Rim MS66 NGC. The so-called Wire Rim variant is actually a result of extruded metal that squeezed between the obverse/reverse die and the collar. It is rarely seen as a uniform finish around each side. It was viewed by Mint workers in 1907 as a flaw and an impediment to the commercial usage of these coins (i.e., "they won't stack" as said by bankers of the day). The Mint responded to this criticism by striking the last 20% or so of the production run without any trace of a wire rim--the so-called Flat Rim variant of the High Relief. Since it was not considered a part of the design of the coin or even a desirable outcome by Mint officials, the wire rim is usually only partially seen around each side.
This NGC certified Premium Gem offers bidders the opportunity to acquire what is certainly one of the most desirable High Relief Double Eagles extant. The honey-gold color is evenly distributed and unquestionably original. Razor sharp striking detail is noted over all design elements, the surfaces being smooth enough to allow full appreciation of this feature. The finish is nearly matte-like in texture, a not uncommon characteristic for the issue. A coin that would please even the most discerning collector. Population: 26 in 66, 8 finer (5/05).
