The more jaded collector or dealer might view this as "just another Gem High Relief." And those that view this piece in that way will most likely be just as content to own another Gem High Relief as this one. Because when this coin is held in the hand, the light adjusted, and the loupe descends over the surface this is not "just another High Relief." This storied coin is one of three pieces that came out of the Norweb estate. The three coins all were originally purchased or obtained in 1907, but from different sources: one piece was obtained from President Theodore Roosevelt, who was a friend or acquaintance of Albert Fairchild Holden; a second piece (this one) was obtained from Homer Saint-Gaudens, son of the coin's designer, Augustus Saint-Gaudens; and the third coin was most likely purchased from Henry Chapman.<BR>These three coins remained in the Norweb family until the family's numismatic holdings were sold at public auction in 1987-88. It is easily identifiable as the Homer Saint-Gaudens piece by a short, shallow, upside-down V-shaped mark in the left obverse field. The wire rim is especially pronounced, especially on the obverse. The satiny mint luster glows and swirls over each side and has taken on a slight reddish tinge, but the one feature about this coin's color that is unforgettable is the splash of lilac on the lower reverse just below the eagle's belly and above the central rays of the sun. Simply an extraordinary coin. No, this coin is not for the person who is looking for a "nice High Relief." This coin is for someone who realizes they are holding history in their hands. </FONT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><BR><A name=PricesRealized></A><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" bgColor=#000000 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%"><TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=3 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%" bgColor=#79735c><A name=PR><FONT face=arial color=#ffffff size=3><B>Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions</B> </FONT></A></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#f6f6ed><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=1><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Date</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Service</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Price</B></TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>06/06/1998</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$77,050.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>06/04/1999</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$27,600.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>03/14/1996</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$20,625.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>11/18/1999</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$25,875.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>03/23/2003</B></TD><TD width="33%">NGC</TD><TD width="33%">$25,300.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>01/01/1990</B></TD><TD width="33%">NGC</TD><TD width="33%">$41,800.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>12/01/1999</B></TD><TD width="33%">NGC</TD><TD width="33%">$28,750.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>01/01/1994</B></TD><TD width="33%">NGC</TD><TD width="33%">$24,200.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>08/01/1995</B></TD><TD width="33%">NGC</TD><TD width="33%">$18,920.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>03/16/1996</B></TD><TD width="33%">NGC</TD><TD width="33%">$19,800.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>11/23/2002</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$25,012.50</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>12/01/2000</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$25,300.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>03/05/2002</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$25,875.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>05/01/1990</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$37,400.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>05/01/1991</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$29,700.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>05/01/1995</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$24,200.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>10/01/1998</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$23,650.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>02/01/1999</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$21,850.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>07/01/1997</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$20,350.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>05/01/1997</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$19,800.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>01/01/1995</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$2,200.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>02/12/1999</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$23,000.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>01/12/2002</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$26,450.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>06/01/1996</B></TD><TD width="33%">ANACS</TD><TD width="33%">$13,200.00</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff><FONT face=arial size=1 ?>PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium.
