1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS65 PCGS. Volumes have been written about High Relief Double Eagles; perhaps the finest available embodiment of the vision of Augustus Saint-Gaudens for anyone not well-heeled enough to be able to acquire the Ultra High Relief piece such as the one also featured in this auction. When on display, this exquisite design stands out, quite literally, from the rest of the pack, and its reputation as a numismatic masterpiece is such that perhaps every serious collector of U.S coinage wants one. Heritage has the privilege of featuring several of these exquisite twenties in virtually all of our Signature Auctions, and recent results tell us that this piece's popularity shows no signs of abating.
This piece is an example of the Wire Rim variant, so-called because of the narrow ridge of metal that protrudes from the outer edges of the coin. Walter Breen referred to this as a Knife Rim, but whatever the nomenclature, it was unpopular with Mint officials in 1907 for practical reasons, and manufacturing methods were changed to minimize the feature, with some success. This particular coin shows its wire rim most prominently between 12 o'clock and 7 o'clock on the obverse. It is a brilliant, peach-gold Gem, blessed with a nearly uniform metallic sheen over its surfaces. Surface abrasions are few and unobtrusive, and detract neither from the coin's eye appeal nor from the magnificence of the design.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
