1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS65 PCGS. This satiny Gem Mint State piece has a remarkably sharp strike. Liberty's head and hands are fully detailed, and the Washington city scene is brought up nicely. The tail feathers on the reverse are sharply split to the border. While the surfaces have the usual tiny surface ticks that keep this piece out of the Superb Gem category, it is an excellent piece with wonderful eye appeal. Both sides are fully brilliant with light yellow-gold color.
This example appears to be from a different die pair than most High Relief double eagles. The typical example has swirling die polish lines in the obverse fields, especially among and above the rays to the left, and below Liberty's extended arm to the right. These die lines appear both on Mint State examples and those few that are certified as proofs. The Gem that is offered in this lot has finely visible die polishing lines, but in different locations. It also has a reverse die crack that we don't recall seeing on other pieces. This crack begins at the back of the eagle's mouth, up across the head just behind the eye, through the field, and across the leading edge of the top wing.
While it is doubtful that many collectors will consider collecting High Relief double eagles by die state, the presence of this die crack is important to the numismatic historian. It helps to document the number of dies actually used to produce these coins, and is clearly an aid in the authentication process.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
