<B>1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS65 PCGS.</B></I> As usual, this sale provides a wonderful choice between several High Relief double eagles, providing a wide range of quality, including this amazing Gem. The High Relief double eagles have a medallic appearance that was the intent of Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Since he was a sculptor and not so much a coin designer, Saint-Gaudens produced a design that would have been ideal for a commemorative coin or medal, or for some special coinage issue intended for collectors. However, the design was not conducive to the high speed operations of the Mint for a regular issue coin.<BR> This example is an amazing Gem with brilliant luster exceptional eye appeal. Both sides are pristine with amazing surfaces that a free of any distractions. This piece actually has many of the characteristics usually associated with those coins certified as proofs. The fields are full of fine, swirling die polish lines, with a heavy buildup close to the borders. The only disqualifying characteristic is the quality of the strike, falling a little short of the requirements for a full proof coin.<BR> The two grading services, NGC and PCGS, disagree about the status of such pieces. NGC will certify examples of this issue and also the Flat Rim variety as proofs, while PCGS will not grade any High Relief as a proof.
