1907<$20> High Relief, Wire Rim MS65 PCGS. An impeccably preserved representative that incorporates an uncommonly bold strike and a near-absence of the normally encountered "stacking friction." Only a tiny area on Liberty's right knee can be described as having any noticeable flatness. Rich yellow-gold color bursts forth over satiny, nearly unmarked surfaces. For identification purposes, we note two small alloy stains beneath the eagle on the right side of the reverse. While Augustus Saint-Gaudens' original double eagle design is arguably the most beautiful coin ever to flow from the Mint, the striking pressure required to produce each coin resulted in unacceptable die wastage. To rectify this problem, the Mint lowered the relief of the design after striking only 11,250 pieces with both wire and flat rims. Despite this low mintage, however, the issue is well represented in today's numismatic community as thousands of High Relief Twenties were saved for both their novelty and artistic beauty.
