1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS65 PCGS. Although the plastic holder makes such a determination quite difficult, there is little actual evidence of the wire rim on this example, although it does exist. The surfaces on both sides of this Gem have a satiny yellow sheen that is characteristic of these coins. The devices are fully defined, a result of the effort that went into production with multiple, carefully aligned strikes of the coining press. A few tiny surface marks are expected at this grade level.
The Wire Rim pieces were struck first, and were considered undesirable at the time they were produced. In The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Jim Halperin and Mark Van Winkle explain: "Most of the first two-thirds of High Relief double eagle production suffered from a production defect called a 'fin.' This was a thin blade of gold raised above the rim of the coin. The Mint considered it both an aesthetic defect and a legal one, as the fin was quickly abraded off the coin, leaving an underweight gold piece. It was certainly not considered an aesthetic element, as commonly regarded by collectors today. The milling procedure and planchet size for the double eagle blanks was slightly modified to correct this small flaw about December 16th, according to numismatic researcher Roger Burdette." This new reference was published by Ivy Press in 2006, and is illustrated with coins from the remarkable Phillip H. Morse Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
