1907<$20> High Relief, Wire Rim MS65 PCGS. Although the Mint apparently produced 11,250 or 12,367 pieces of this coveted issue, depending on which source one believes, demand today for these pieces is insatiable. Since less than two dozen examples of the 1907 Ultra High Relief are known to exist, collectors--even those who collect no other gold, in some cases those who own no other coins at all--avidly seek an example (or multiple examples) for their collections. In Gem condition, as the present specimen, the 1907 High Relief Saint-Gaudens issues, Flat Rim or Wire Rim, offer collectors a chance to obtain the crme de la crme of U.S. numismatics, the issue generally acknowledged to be the most beautiful and desirable U.S. coin issue, here in nearly the finest condition obtainable. As Q. David Bowers writes in his A Guide Book of Double Eagle Gold Coins, "Today, well over 5,000 coins exist, many in Mint State preservation. Although the demand for them is intense, the availability is such that many are on the market at any given time. The coin plays to several strong demands, including its necessity for inclusion in a type set illustrating different designs, its need for a date and mint set of double eagles, and, perhaps in an even wider circle, the desire for many collectors to own the variety for its beauty and history, even if it is the only double eagle in their collection."
As the present cataloger lacks deep expertise in most other fields, he will make no attempt to draw strict parallels with other collecting venues. But if you are a wine connoisseur, would a bottle of vintage Chateau Lafitte-Rothschild be as momentous? For art collectors, would a painting by Vincent van Gogh, Hieronymus Bosch, or Rembrandt van Rijn be a parallel? For sports card collectors, would it be a mint condition Honus Wagner, or another choice?
The present coin shows its partial wire rim from 12 to 2 and 3 to 4 on the obverse. The surfaces are fine-grained and mattelike, and only a single contact mark through Liberty's forehead is worth mentioning. Deep, intense luster radiates from each side of this stunning, problem-free piece. It would be an interesting exercise to determine what collectors in other fields would draw as a parallel--and which of those many aficionados are the most desirous of this Gem specimen.
