1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS64 PCG
1907<$20> High Relief, Wire Rim MS64 PCGS. After many month's delays Augustus Saint-Gaudens finally sent models of the new double eagle to President Roosevelt, who in turn sent them to Charles Barber. Reductions were not actually made by Barber, as was once assumed, as he was not sufficiently trained and familiar with the new Janvier reducing machine. After more months passed and the Ultra High Reliefs were struck, the "regular issue" High Reliefs were put into production. These pieces are thought by many to be the most beautiful coins ever struck.
This is a lovely, upper-end MS64 example that shows sharp striking definition, save for a bit of minor softness at the top of the reverse. The bright, satin-like surfaces have a light, even overlay of green-golden patina that is most appealing, and there are no obvious or distracting marks on either side.
