1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS64 PCGS. While Roger Burdette acknowledges the beauty of the Saint-Gaudens double eagle design, in his Renaissance of American Coinage 1905-1908, he also criticizes Saint-Gaudens and Roosevelt for not doing more to make the models suitable for day-to-day production (2006): "By continuing with the design in a relief that was not coinable, Saint-Gaudens lost his best chance to explore the limits of artistry on circulation coinage. By the close of 1907 the result was Charles Barber's re-engraving of the Saint's design, rather than Saint-Gaudens producing the highest art within the practical limits of coinage."
Practical or not, the High Relief double eagles are works of art, and the near-Gem offered here is an appealing representative. The boldly impressed devices and satiny sun-gold surfaces are carefully preserved, and the overall visual appeal is amazing. A delightful piece that is sure to please the victorious bidder.
From The Carlton Woods Collection.

Coin Engraver: Augustus Saint-Gaudens

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
