1907<$20> High Relief, Wire Rim MS64 PCGS. The High Relief was a revision of Saint-Gaudens' Ultra High Relief. The latter was impractical for circulation strikes because it required several blows from a medal press to bring up the design. Lowering the relief helped to solve this problem but did not eliminate it. According to Mint records, a total of 12,367 High Relief double eagles were struck for circulation by the end of December 1907. Some of these coins displayed a thin "fin," or so-called Wire Rim, around the outer extremely that resulted from excessive metal flow between the die face and collar during the striking process.
The Wire Rim on this coin is difficult to discern in the holder, but does show in the upper left and right reverse quadrants. The design elements are expectedly bold, revealing only minor softness in the dome of the Capitol building. Satin-like mint luster is a bright yellow-gold color, which is typical for the High Reliefs. The grade is defined by a minor mark on Liberty's neck, along with a couple of others in the obverse fields.
