<B>1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS64 PCGS.</B></I> In <I>Numismatic Art in America</B></I> Vermeule writes, "Although the authorities at the Mint flattened the Saint-Gaudens double eagle relief to facilitate striking and handling, this coin has remained a forceful demonstration that modern, mechanical coinage need in no way be pedestrian." Of course, the High Relief pieces demonstrate even more of that compelling design by Saint-Gaudens than the final modified circulation-strike design. Speaking of pedestrian, Charles Barber would not appreciate Vermeule's comment, "Both coins the circulation-strike design, and the modified design with IN GOD WE TRUST added seem as modern sixty years after they were conceived as any issues, American or otherwise, produced in the past generation; and compared with what had been tolerated heretofore in the United States both burst as artistic skyrockets in the horizons of our academic creativity."<BR> Although the PCGS encapsulation makes it difficult to see, this lovely near-Gem appears to show more of a wire rim on the reverse than the obverse.
