1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS64 NGC. A splendid near-Gem of this famous and coveted numismatic rarity. The straw-gold surfaces are satiny, and neither side possesses any remotely mentionable marks. The strike is sharp, with only a hint of incompleteness on Liberty's waist and on the top edge of the eagle's front wing. As usual, Liberty's raised knee has minor highpoint bluntness. The wire rim is complete on the obverse, and nearly so on the reverse, absent only between 11 and 1 o'clock. Breen (1988) stated that for the 12,367 pieces struck, "each normal striking required five blows from the press," a remarkable (and impractical) effort to produce an issue for circulation. Evidence of the multiple strikes is best observed on LIBERTY, which shows minor doubling.

Coin Engraver: Augustus Saint-Gaudens

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
