1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS64 NGC. Soon after the initial production of the Ultra High Relief version of the Saint-Gaudens double eagle, it became apparent that they were unsuitable for circulation-strike coins. Paul Green, in an October 28, 2003 Numismatic News article, indicates that the Ultras would not stack properly, and that: "... they could never be produced in sufficient numbers for regular use ... because the dies cracked after managing just 19 or so coins." A lower but still High Relief version was then struck. These 1907 Roman Numeral High Reliefs came with either a flat or so-called wire rim. While not as rare as the Ultra High Relief type, the High Reliefs, with their bold designs and low mintage (12,367 pieces), are still extremely desirable.
Gorgeous satiny luster enlivens both sides of this near-Gem, and a solid strike imparts excellent detail to the design features. A few trivial handling marks on apricot-gold surfaces do not detract from the coin's overall eye appeal. A knife-like fin is noted on a good portion of both the obverse and reverse, though it is sometimes difficult to discern in the holder.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
